Is Bhutan prone to illicit drugs?
The recent arrest of a woman in Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi airport with controlled substance ketamine means Bhutan is increasingly becoming either consumer or trade route of the drugs.
The Bhutanese security arrested two more nationals in connection with the smuggling. There are no further reports from the security agencies.
Given the limited network of the national flag carrier Druk Air, it is less likely to use Bhutan as major trade route by smugglers. This means, the new generation in the country are gradually prone to the illegal substance use.
Following the bust, national media are questioning the security installations in Paro Airport, the only international airport of the country. The government has not responded what measures would be in place to check the smuggling.
