PM meets SAARC secretary general, Canadian envoy

The Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay met with Mr. Arjun Bahadur Thapa, newly appointed Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) on Monday (May 19).

PM Tobgay warmly welcomed Mr. Thapa and extended his heartiest congratulations on his assumption of the post and expressed confidence that Thapa’s distinguished diplomatic career and vast experience in dealing with international relations, he would be able to provide sound guidance and leadership in steering SAARC and accomplishing its objectives.

In response Thapa said he would work in his best interests toward making SAARC a meaningful organization which would be able to serve its intended purpose and meet mutual objectives through genuine partnership among its member nations. Mr. Thapa said that he holds a sincere and firm belief in making SAARC a living reality.

Thapa is making introductory visit to all SAARC member countries before the SAARC summit scheduled for this November in Nepal.

Earlier on the day, PM met with Mr. Stewart Beck, outgoing Canadian ambassador to Bhutan and India. He was on his farewell visit to Bhutan.

Wishing Ambassador Beck the very best in his future endeavors, PM Tobgay said that he would continue to draw on the Ambassador’s personal friendship and goodwill towards Bhutan to explore other areas of commercial partnership.

Ambassador Beck conveyed that he was hopeful and would like to see Bhutan and Canada collaborate additionally on areas of innovation, education and entrepreneurship in the future.
