Southern districts in Bhutan affected by windstorm

A severe and unexpected windstorm has affected the lives in most of the southern districts of Bhutan on Saturday night.

No casualties have yet been known but several people have been injured by fallen trees, blown away roofs. Power cables have been uprooted and most districts remain dark today.

In few places where severe damages occurred, the local administration has distributed tarpaulins for initial relief.

King Jigme Khesar has ordered the deployment armed forces to assist in the on going relief efforts throughout Southern Bhutan, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay updated his status in Facebook.

“Government officials continuing to assess situation and provide immediate relief. Countless Dee-suups (militia volunteers) has been volunteering since early dawn today,” he wrote.
