Resettled Bhutanese in US kills wife
A resettled Bhutanese man in Burlington, Vermont (US) killed his wife Yogeshwari Khadka, 32, and severely injured mother in law Tulsa Rimal, 54.
Aita Gurung, 34, who attacked the two women with meat Cleaver, has been in custody. He had earlier voluntarily admitted himself to University of Vermont Medical Center for a mental-health evaluation, the Burlington Free Press reported.
Gurung had called police about his mental state in regard to his relationship with his wife, Yogeswari Khadka, 32.
He attacked wife and mother in law shortly after Gurung was released from hospital. The violence took place at the family home and ended outside, with one armed neighbour intervening and detaining Gurung until police arrived.
Khadka died from severe head injuries, including wounds to her skull, arms and hands.
Gurung’s mother-in-law was admitted to hospital Thursday night for injuries suffered during the attack, in critical condition.
Gurung on Friday pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder and was ordered jailed pending an evaluation for mental competency and sanity.
Relatives of Khadka have appealed the community members to extend financial assistance to help injured Rimal family and the young child of the couple. Donate via this link.
