Dago conferred Japan honour

The Government of Japan has conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star to former Home Minister Dago Tshering in a simple ceremony in Thimphu on September 6.

Japan’s Ambassador to Bhutan, Satoshi Suzuki, delivered the 2021 Spring Decorations to Tshering. He is the first Bhutanese recipient of the award. Announced last year, the ceremony was deferred due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tshering served as Ambassador of Bhutan to Japan earlier and this award was recognised for his contributions to strengthening the relationship and friendship between Japan and Bhutan.

Tshering is the prime architect of evicting Lhotsampas from southern Bhutan in 1990s when he was assistant home minister and home minister. Bhutanese diaspora and former refugees campaigned against the decision of the Japan government to honour him despite his fathomable human rights violation records.

The Order of the Rising Sun is awarded by the Emperor of Japan to individuals, both Japanese and foreign nationals, in recognition of their meritorious service and distinguished achievements.
